After I picked out a gift for each of my in-laws they collectively sent me a check. They told me in a typed letter that they didn’t know what to get me. It was very impersonal and really hurtful. I decided to send the money back since it misses the point of Christmas gifts anyway.
Needless to say, I will not be giving gifts to them next year.

Yes, its inappropriate, when you giving money as a gift, it shows that you are not creative!

Cash is inappropriate in my point of view. At least, give a gift card. It shows that you know which brand the receiver usually uses.
